The collection, which currently includes more than four hundred works, highlights the visual history of Crete over the last 150 years through the works of Cretan artists, while also following contemporary trends in painting, sculpture and installations. The historically interesting drawings, cartoons, sketches, and works of modern handiwork (ceramics, wood carvings, etc.) are also noteworthy. As for the thematic composition of the works, a large part is the landscapes of the urban and outdoor fabric of Crete (mainly Heraklion), still lifes, portraits, studies of interior space, as well as inspirations from the ancient world (Theseus, Medea, Oedipus, etc.) and newer (Kallas, Melina) mythology. At the same time, there is no shortage of theatre, music (Hatzidakis, Theodorakis), poetry, and literature (Cretan and world).
This short presentation is an open invitation to visit the Museum of Visual Arts of Heraklion (METH) in this art-loving corner of the Cretan land, which hosts works of art, ideas, and values. Still, above all it is a shelter of love for the visual arts and their creators.
